Planning a Destin vacation used to mean opening a dozen browser tabs, calling operators, cross-referencing availability, and hoping everything fit together. You'd spend hours researching what to do, when to do it, and who to book with — before you even left the house.
We built Plan My Adventure to fix all of that. It's a four-step interactive trip planner built right into whatsgoodlocal.com — and it's completely free to use. Here's how it works and why we built it this way.
Nobody Plans a Vacation the Hard Way Anymore. Except in Destin.
Every major travel destination has a tool that lets you pick dates, browse activities, and lock in a schedule. Destin — one of the most visited beach destinations in the country — didn't have one. Not a real one.
The options were: scroll through TripAdvisor reviews, call operators individually, use a generic itinerary generator that knew nothing about local conditions, or just wing it and hope for the best.
We knew the operators, we knew the activities, and we knew the conditions that make certain things better at certain times of day. So we built the tool we always wished existed.
Pick Your Dates
The planner starts by asking for your arrival and departure dates. Enter them and it immediately confirms your trip length — "5 Days · 4 Nights" — so you know exactly how many days you have to fill.
Why this matters: Everything downstream — how many activities you can fit, which days get which experiences, scheduling buffers — all depends on knowing your window. Most people arrive on a Saturday and leave the following Saturday. But plenty of folks are here for a long weekend, a week, or a two-week family trip. The planner adapts to all of it.
Date validation is built in — you can't select a departure before your arrival, and the calendar won't let you plan for dates in the past. Small things, but they matter when someone's excited and moving fast.
Pick Your Adventures
This is the fun part. You're presented with a grid of activity pills — each one a tap to select, another tap to deselect. Pick as many as you want. The planner handles fitting them in.

- ⛳ Golf — championship courses with bay views
Why this design: We specifically avoided checkboxes and dropdowns. The pill tap interface is intuitive on mobile — which is how the majority of people visiting Destin are browsing. One tap selects, another deselects, and you can see your picks at a glance.
Your Custom Itinerary
This is where the planner earns its keep. Based on your trip length and selected activities, it builds a day-by-day schedule — automatically spreading activities across your available days so you're not trying to do six things in one afternoon.
For each activity, you can choose from multiple time slots. Each slot shows:
- The time — 9:00 AM, 1:00 PM, sunset, etc.
- The price — per person, with deal notes like "BOGO 50% off" or "Calm morning waters — perfect!"
- 🔥 BEST VALUE badge — automatically flagged on the slot we'd recommend most
For the helicopter tour, there's an additional layer of customization — you pick your flight package (Coastal Tour, Beach Run, Jaws Run, Seaside Tour, or Fireworks Tour) AND whether you want a shared flight or a private charter. The price updates in real time as you make your selections.
Smart scheduling notes appear at the bottom of this step — reminders like "allow a 2-hour buffer between same-day activities" and "morning activities are best in Destin for lighter winds and calmer water." These are genuine local insights baked into the UX so people make better decisions, not just faster ones.
Your Adventure Dashboard
Step 4 is the command center. Everything you've planned is laid out in one clean dashboard — and from here, you can take action on all of it.
📅 Mini Trip Calendar
A visual calendar at the top of the dashboard shows your full trip month. Each day with planned activities gets a colored dot — red for pending, green for booked. As you confirm bookings, the calendar updates in real time. It's a satisfying visual confirmation that your trip is coming together.
📋 Individual Booking Cards
Each activity gets its own booking card showing the activity name, the day and time you selected, the price, and the status (Pending or Booked). Each card has a Book Now → button that links directly to the operator's booking page — FareHarbor lightframe for most activities, direct links for others.
Already called ahead and booked the old-fashioned way? There's an "Already booked?" button on each card that marks it as confirmed without going through the online booking flow. The card turns green, the calendar dot flips, and the summary updates.
📆 Add to Google Calendar
Every activity generates a pre-filled Google Calendar event with the activity name, date, time, location (Destin, FL), and description. One tap and it's in your calendar — with a reminder before the day so nobody misses their helicopter tour because they got too comfortable at the beach bar the night before.
📊 Live Summary Bar
At the bottom of the dashboard, a summary shows your total adventures, how many are booked, and how many are still pending — updating live as you work through the list. Clean, clear, no math required.
Why We Built This — and What It Means for Destin Visitors
Destin gets millions of visitors a year. A huge percentage of them arrive without a plan, spend the first two days figuring out what to do, end up doing less than they wanted, and leave wishing they'd done more. We've heard it over and over.
The irony is that the experiences are all right there — incredible operators with real availability, reasonable prices, and genuinely unforgettable things to do. The friction isn't the activities. It's the discovery and planning process.
Plan My Adventure removes that friction entirely. You can go from "I have no idea what to do in Destin" to "I have a full itinerary with Google Calendar events and booking links" in under five minutes. That's the goal.
It's also good for the operators we feature. When visitors show up informed, excited, and already committed to their plan, the booking rate goes up, the no-show rate goes down, and the overall experience is better for everyone.
