If you were born on or after January 1, 1988 — roughly 38 and under — Florida requires a Boating Safety Education ID card to operate any vessel of 10 horsepower or more. Every pontoon on this page is between 50 and 115 horsepower, so it applies to all of them.
Born before 1988? You are exempt. Just bring photo ID and drive. Only the person actually driving needs it, so one qualified driver covers the whole boat — which for most families is the fastest way through this.
And if you already hold a boater card from another state, you are done. Destin operators accept any nationally recognised NASBLA card, so there is nothing to buy — bring the one you have.
Take the test before you arrive, not at the dock. At least one Destin operator states plainly that if you cannot pass the test or you turn up without proper ID, no refund is issued. That is a $14.53 exam standing between you and a $300 booking.
Take it online, print it, done. Valid 90 days — long enough for your whole trip and a return visit — and accepted by every rental operator in Destin.

No. Every self-drive rental operator in Destin restricts their boats to Destin Harbor, Choctawhatchee Bay, Santa Rosa Sound and Crab Island. Boats are not permitted through Destin Pass, because the pass has strong tidal current and is genuinely dangerous for a flat-bottomed pontoon. If you want to be out in the Gulf you need a captained charter or a ticketed cruise on a larger vessel.
It depends entirely on the operator, and the range is wider than most people expect — from 18 at one company to 21 plus two years of boating experience at another. Every operator also requires a valid photo ID and a credit card in the renter's name. Check the age on the specific boat before you book; it is the most common reason people get turned away at the dock.
Twelve on a standard pontoon, fourteen on the largest double-decker. These limits are absolute — they are set by Coast Guard capacity plates, they include infants and children of every age, and operators will turn away the extra passengers even if you are under the boat's weight limit.
It varies, and it is worth asking before you book because it moves the real price. Sunshine Watersports includes fuel with a small surcharge. The other operators do not state it either way in their listings. On captained charters fuel is almost always included and usually said so explicitly.
Yes — and this matters, because dogs are banned on every beach in Destin and Okaloosa County. Several rental operators allow pets aboard, some free and some for a small fee. A pontoon is effectively the only way to have a day on the water here with your dog.
March through October for self-drive rentals; the tiki boats run a shorter April to September. Nobody rents self-drive pontoons in winter, partly because demand collapses and partly because Gulf water levels run about ten inches lower from December through February, which leaves Crab Island too shallow to reach.
Read the cancellation policy before you book, because it varies sharply. At least one self-drive operator states plainly that there are no rainchecks. Captained charters tend to be more forgiving — some offer a full refund with 24 hours' notice, others with seven days. Check the forecast and the beach flag before you commit.
