Top 5 Things to Do on the Water in Destin: The Countdown

Destin is a sandbar with a harbor attached. Almost everything worth doing here happens on, in, or over the water — and the difference between a great vacation day and a wasted one is usually knowing which boat to get on, and booking it before Tuesday.

Top 5 Water Activities in Destin, Part 1 — hosted by Sofia Navarro, produced by Good Day Destin.

Updated August 19, 2026. Prices, seasons and age limits verified against operator sites this month. Rates on the water change fast — the booking links below are live, so treat the price on the booking page as the real one.

The Top 5 Water Activities in Destin

This is the countdown from the video above, in order. Want every option, filtered by age, group size and where you're staying? See all 35 water activities →

The list below isn't the five cheapest or the five most famous. It's the five that people come off the boat still talking about. Every one of them is bookable today.

5Snorkel & Dolphin Cruise
Snorkelers in clear Gulf water on a snorkel and dolphin cruise out of Destin, Florida

Two and a half hours, two snorkeling stops, and a dolphin cruise in between. Gear is included, so nobody has to own anything. The reason this one opens the list rather than closing it is that it's the most forgiving trip on the water — no skill, no age floor, no upper body strength required. If one person in your group is nervous about the Gulf, this is the trip that fixes it.

  • How long About 2.5 hours
  • What you do Two snorkel stops plus a dolphin cruise between them
  • Good for Mixed-ability groups, first-timers, grandparents
  • Rating in the video 4.9 on Google across 2,128 reviews
  • Gear Mask, snorkel and fins provided

All agesNo experience neededGear included

Local tip: take the morning departure. The Gulf lays down overnight and visibility is at its best before the afternoon boat traffic stirs the bottom up. By 2pm the same stop can look like weak tea.

4Cypress Springs Paddle Board Tour
Paddleboarders on the clear turquoise water of Cypress Springs near Destin, Florida

The odd one out, and that's exactly why it's here. This tour leaves the Gulf entirely and takes you inland to a spring-fed run where the water is so clear the boards look like they're floating on air. It's a full seven-hour day with transport, and it's the single most photographed thing most families do all week. If you've already done the beach twice and want a day that feels like a different vacation, this is it.

  • How long About 7 hours, including travel
  • Where Cypress Springs — inland, not on the Gulf
  • Water Spring-fed, constantly around 68°F year-round
  • Rating in the video 4.5 on Tripadvisor
  • Good for Families with older kids, photographers, anyone tired of salt water

Full-day tripLunch includedBooks out early

Local tip: spring water sits near 68°F all year, which feels genuinely cold in August after a week of 85°F Gulf. That shock is half the fun, but bring a towel and a dry shirt for the ride home — nobody ever does.

3Snuba Tour
Snuba divers breathing from a surface-supplied air line over a reef near Destin, Florida

Snuba is the missing rung between snorkeling and scuba. You breathe from a regulator like a diver, but the air tank floats on a raft at the surface and feeds you through a twenty-foot line. No tank on your back, no certification, no course. You just go down and look at things. For most people it's the first time they've ever properly breathed underwater, and that is not a small thing to hand someone on a Tuesday afternoon.

  • How long 2–3 hours
  • Certification None required
  • Ages All ages welcome
  • Depth Limited by the air line — roughly 20 feet
  • Rating in the video 4.9 TripShock · 4.0 Tripadvisor

No certificationAll agesTank stays at the surface

Local tip: if anyone in the group is on the fence about scuba, do Snuba first. It costs a fraction of a discovery dive and answers the only real question — whether they're comfortable breathing underwater — in about ninety seconds.

2Parasailing
▶  Part 2 of the video — numbers 2 and 1

Part 2 of the countdown — hosted by Sofia Navarro, produced by Good Day Destin.

Four hundred feet up, and the first thing everyone notices is the silence. The boat noise drops away, the Gulf opens out in every direction, the coastline runs off to the horizon both ways, and the dolphins are usually right there underneath you. It lasts about ten minutes in the air and people talk about it for years. Single, double and triple flights are all available, so nobody has to go up alone unless they want to.

Parasailing over the Emerald Coast.

  • Time in the air Roughly 10–12 minutes
  • Flight options Single, double or triple
  • Position Closest parasailing operation to Crab Island
  • Rating in the video 4.6 on Tripadvisor across 1,042 reviews
  • You get wet Only if you ask for a dip — otherwise you take off and land dry

Fly in pairs or threesDry take-off and landingWind-dependent

Local tip: book the earliest flight of the day. Wind builds through the afternoon and parasail operators cancel on wind before anything else — a 9am slot is the one most likely to actually fly, and the Gulf is glassiest for photos.

1Wakesurfing
Wakesurfer riding the wave behind the boat on the water in Destin, Florida

Wakesurfing is the one that surprises people. There's no rope once you're up — the boat throws a wave and you ride it, endlessly, at about ten miles an hour. It's dramatically easier than ocean surfing because the wave never closes out and never stops coming, which is why nine-year-olds and sixty-year-olds get up on the same afternoon. Two hours, up to six people aboard, and the captain coaches you the whole way.

  • How long 2 hours on the water
  • Group size Up to 6 people
  • Minimum age 9 and up
  • Price From $699 for the boat — split six ways, roughly $117 each
  • Rating in the video 5.0 on Google

Ages 9+Beginners get up same dayRanked #1

Local tip: this is a private boat charter, not a per-person ticket. The sticker price looks steep next to a $65 jet ski until you divide it by six — then it's the best value on this whole page for a group that wants two solid hours of something to do.

Pick by who you're with

Most "things to do in Destin" lists hand you forty options and no way to choose. Here's the short version. Find your row, book that thing, read the rest later.

Who's with youBook this firstRoughlyWhy
Little kids (2–7) Crab Island by pontoon or shuttle From $20 shuttle-share Knee-deep water, no waves, and they can stand up the whole time
Kids 8–12 Dolphin cruise or the glow kayak tour $44–$86 Long enough to feel like an event, short enough to survive
Teens Jet ski rental or parasailing $65–$95 / flight rates vary The two things they'll actually post about
Couples Sunset cruise, or a private charter From $59 shared Golden hour on the Gulf is the whole reason people come back
Big group / bachelorette Private yacht or double-decker pontoon See charter pages Splitting a private boat beats twelve separate tickets
Rough surf day Big Kahuna's or The Track From $44.99 advance Double red flags close the Gulf — these don't care
Serious anglers Deep sea charter out of the harbor From $100 per person Destin has the largest charter fleet in Florida for a reason
Book the boat first, plan the rest around it. Charters and small-group tours sell out days ahead in summer, and weather cancellations push everyone into the next available slot. Restaurants and beach days flex. A 9am pontoon does not.

Crab Island: what it is, and how to actually get there

Boats rafted together on the shallow Crab Island sandbar north of the Destin bridge

Crab Island is not an island. It's a submerged sandbar just north of the Destin Bridge, at the mouth of Choctawhatchee Bay, and it is the single most misunderstood attraction in this town. Visitors search for directions to it, drive around looking for a parking lot, and never find one — because there isn't one, and there can't be.

What's actually there is a stretch of water running roughly one to four feet deep where a hundred boats raft up on a summer Saturday, people stand around in waist-deep water with a drink, kids float on inflatables, music plays, and vendor boats motor between the rafts selling food. It's a floating block party that happens to sit on top of a sandbar.

Do not try to swim out to it. Crab Island looks close from shore and it is not. The channel between carries constant boat traffic and serious tidal current through East Pass. The only safe way there is on a boat.

Your three ways to get there

OptionRoughlyBest forThe catch
Shared tiki boat cruise From $20 per person Couples, small families, first visit You're on their schedule, not yours
Private pontoon charter From $350–$495 Groups of 6–14, all-day plans Costs more up front, cheaper per head past six people
Rent a boat yourself Half day from ~$275 Confident boaters You need a Florida boater card if born on or after Jan 1, 1988

The rules people find out about the hard way

  • No glass Glass containers are prohibited. Cans and plastic only — this is enforced.
  • Alcohol BYOB is fine. Vendor boats cannot sell it, so buy on shore first.
  • Boater card Required for anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 to operate a rental.
  • Life jackets One per person, and children under 6 must wear one at all times on vessels under 26 feet.
  • BUI Boating under the influence is enforced exactly like DUI, at 0.08%. FWC patrols this sandbar.
  • Spacing Keep 10 feet between rafted vessels and stay out of the marked channels.
  • Pack it out Seagrass beds here are protected under Florida law and littering citations get written.
Vendor boats run roughly March through mid-October. Recent seasons have included burger, barbecue, ice cream and fruit boats. Outside that window Crab Island is still there and still beautiful — just bring your own lunch, because nothing is coming to you.

Speed and adrenaline

If your group's definition of a good day involves going fast, these are the four to look at. All of them run out of Destin Harbor or HarborWalk Village, so you can walk between operators and compare.

Jet ski rentals

The default Destin thrill, and still the best value on the water. Boogies runs the largest fleet in town with the closest access to Crab Island — you're in open water within a minute of leaving the dock. Skis seat up to three, so a family of three rides one machine.

  • Price $65 for 30 minutes, $95 for the hour, per ski
  • Riders per ski Up to 3
  • To drive 18 and over to rent in Florida — see the rules section

Cruises and dolphin tours

The lowest-effort water activity there is: you get on, someone else drives, and dolphins show up. Destin's dolphin population is resident and habituated to boats, so sightings are close to routine rather than lucky.

Fishing

Deep sea fishing charter boat out of Destin Harbor, the world's luckiest fishing village

Destin calls itself the World's Luckiest Fishing Village and has the boats to back it up — the largest charter fleet in Florida ties up along the harbor. Red snapper, grouper, amberjack and triggerfish are the headline species. You do not need a fishing license of your own; the charter's license covers everyone aboard.

Which one to pick: shared party boats are the value play and perfectly good for a first offshore trip — you're on a big stable boat with a crew who bait hooks and untangle lines all day. Water fun for little kids

Not every water day has to happen on the Gulf. When the surf is up, when the flags are red, or when you have a four-year-old who is done with boats, these are the places that save the afternoon.

Big Kahuna's Water & Adventure Park

Water slides and towers at Big Kahuna's Water and Adventure Park in Destin, Florida

Forty-plus rides, slides and attractions on Highway 98, minutes from most Destin hotels. It's the default rainy-day and rough-surf answer for families with kids too small for the Gulf, and a full day if you want it to be.

  • Where 1007 US Highway 98 East, Destin
  • Tickets From $44.99 booked online at least a day ahead; $59.99 online same-day; $64.99 at the gate
  • Twilight Tide $43.99 for the last two hours — in-park purchase only
  • Parking Not included. $10–$15 prepaid online, $20 if you pay on arrival
  • Mini golf & Skycoaster Separate tickets — $12.99 and $17.99, or $25.99 combined
  • Season Runs into September with reduced days; the park closes some weekdays late season
Two things that catch people out. Water park admission does not include mini golf or the Skycoaster, and parking is a separate charge that roughly doubles if you pay at the gate. Buy the ticket and the parking online the night before and you save real money.

The Track — Blaster Boats

The Track on Highway 98 has water bumper boats, though they're branded Blaster Boats — each one has a water cannon, and the entire point is soaking your family. For a six-year-old this is frequently the highlight of the week, and it costs less than a sandwich.

  • Where 1125 Highway 98 East, Destin
  • Cost 9 points — points run $1 each, or $55 for a 60-point card
  • To drive Minimum height 3'8"

  • Also there Five go-kart tracks, SkyFlyer, two mini golf courses, Fat Daddy's arcade
There's no wristband here. The Track sells points cards, not unlimited passes — so work out roughly what your kids want to ride before you buy. A 60-point card covers about six Blaster Boat rides, or a mix across the park.

Adults and couples

Destin has a reputation as a family town, which is fair, but the water empties out after five and the evening belongs to whoever books it.

  • Sunset cruise on the Tiki Pub A floating tiki bar with a waterslide, BYOB, 1.5 hours, from $59
  • Sunquest aboard the SOLARIS Dinner, live entertainment and the best views on the coast

Private Yacht Charters: The Destin & Miss B Haven

Two boats, one dock, and the version of this vacation people book once and then book every year after. Both run out of Heron Harbor on Harbor Boulevard, both take up to twelve guests, and both come with a licensed captain — you bring a cooler and show up.

The Miss B Haven private yacht running along the beach off Destin, Florida

A private charter isn't the same product as a cruise ticket. There's no schedule, no other passengers, and no narration you didn't ask for. The captain works to your day — Crab Island for four hours, out through East Pass to look for dolphins, back in for sunset, or all three. For a group of eight or more it stops being an extravagance and starts being arithmetic.

Know before you go

The rules that actually get people turned away at the dock

18 to rent, 14 to operate. Florida law says you must be at least 14 to operate a personal watercraft, but at least 18 to rent one. These two numbers get confused constantly and a 16-year-old will be refused at the counter no matter what the group planned.
  • Boater safety card Anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 must hold a Florida Boating Safety Education ID card to operate a vessel of 10 HP or more. Bring photo ID too.
  • Life jackets One USCG-approved jacket per person aboard. Children under 6 must wear one at all times on vessels under 26 feet.
  • PWC jackets Must be non-inflatable — inflatable PFDs are not legal on a jet ski — and the engine cutoff lanyard must be attached to the operator.
  • BUI Enforced identically to DUI at 0.08%. FWC and county marine patrol work these waters actively.
  • Glass Prohibited at Crab Island. Cans and plastic only.

The local mantra is "knee deep is too deep" on a red flag day. Most Destin beaches have no lifeguard, and the Gulf here produces rip currents that look like calm patches between the breakers. Check today's flag before you go →

When to book what

  • Morning Parasailing, snorkeling, offshore fishing — flattest water, best visibility, lowest cancellation risk
  • Midday Crab Island, jet skis, pontoons — the sandbar is at its liveliest
  • Evening Sunset cruises, glow kayaks, private charters
  • Book ahead Anything private, and anything with fewer than twenty seats, in June through August
  • Weather Operators cancel on wind and lightning, not rain. Build a spare afternoon into the week.

Frequently asked questions

What is the number one water activity in Destin?

Wakesurfing takes the top spot in our countdown. You ride the wave the boat makes with no rope, it's far easier to learn than ocean surfing, and beginners from age nine routinely get up on their first session. Two hours for up to six people from $699, which works out around $117 each for a full group.

How do you get to Crab Island in Destin?

Only by boat — there is no land access and no parking lot, because Crab Island is a submerged sandbar rather than an actual island. Take a shared tiki boat cruise from about $20 per person, book a private pontoon charter from around $350, or rent a boat yourself if you hold a Florida boater safety card. Do not attempt to swim out; the channel carries heavy boat traffic and strong tidal current.

How old do you have to be to rent a jet ski in Destin?

You must be 18 to rent a personal watercraft in Florida, even though the legal age to operate one is 14. Anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 also needs a Florida Boating Safety Education ID card plus photo identification. Passengers can be much younger — the Boogies dolphin tour takes riders from age 5.

What can you do in Destin when the water is too rough?

Big Kahuna's Water & Adventure Park has 40+ slides and rides and doesn't care what the Gulf is doing, with tickets from $44.99 booked online in advance. The Track has Blaster Boats, go-karts and two mini golf courses. The Gulfarium on Okaloosa Island runs live marine shows all day from $35. Double red flags mean the Gulf is legally closed, so this is worth planning for.

Are there bumper boats in Destin?

Yes — The Track on Highway 98 runs them under the name Blaster Boats, each fitted with a water cannon. They cost 9 points on the park's points-card system, which works out at $9 at the single-point rate or less on a multi-point card. Drivers must be at least 3'8" tall and passengers 3'4", with a 450 lb combined limit for two riders.

Is snorkeling in Destin worth it?

Yes, particularly on the morning trips. The East Jetty rocks hold real fish and the water is at its clearest before afternoon boat traffic stirs up the bottom. A guided snorkel and dolphin cruise runs about 2.5 hours with two stops and gear included, and requires no experience at all — it ranked fifth in our countdown for exactly that reason.

Do I need a fishing license for a charter in Destin?

No. The charter boat's licence covers every angler aboard, so you can turn up with nothing. Rods, reels, tackle and bait are supplied on essentially every trip, and most boats have cold storage for your catch.

What's the cheapest way to get on the water in Destin?

A stand-up paddleboard rental from about $24 for one to three hours, or a Southern Star dolphin cruise ticket starting at $5. A shared Crab Island tiki boat cruise from $20 per person is the cheapest way to reach the sandbar itself.

How far in advance should I book water activities in Destin?

For June through August, book private charters and small-group tours at least a week out, and anything on a weekend sooner than that. Weather cancellations push displaced groups into the next available slot, so the calendar tightens quickly after a windy day.
