Every public beach access in Destin

All 13 of them — not the five or six everyone else lists. Parking counts, what it costs, and which ones actually have a bathroom, taken from the city, the county and the state rather than from other travel sites.

Only 2 lots are confirmed free. Destin charges $20 for four hours in its beach parking district, which covers Scenic Highway 98 in Crystal Beach and Gulf Shore Drive on Holiday Isle. Knowing which lots are still free is worth more than any other fact on this page.

An orange label means nobody publishes it. Not the city, not the county, not the tourism board. 6 of these 13 accesses have no parking count anywhere in public record, and most of the city's beach trails list a cross street and nothing else. We're walking them and filling the gaps — if you've been to one recently and know the answer, tell us.

Free beach wheelchairs

The Destin Fire Control District lends free beach wheelchairs at three sites, 9am to 4pm, Memorial Day through Labor Day. They're at James Lee Park, the Shirah Street access and June White Decker Park — and they can't be moved between locations, so pick your beach around the chair rather than the other way around.

Reserve at least 24 hours ahead on (850) 837-8413, Monday through Friday. Chairs aren't issued under a red flag.

Henderson Beach State Park runs its own separate program — collect a key from the park office during opening hours and return it the same day. That one isn't seasonal.

Rules that catch people out

Destin sits in Okaloosa County, which has the strictest beach rules on the Emerald Coast. If you've stayed in Miramar Beach or on 30A before, several of these will be different from what you're used to — and the county line runs right past James Lee Park.

  • No dogs. Not on any beach in Destin or Okaloosa County. Service animals only; emotional support animals are specifically excluded. Walton County allows dogs with a permit, but only residents and property owners can get one.
  • No alcohol in beach parks. It's banned in every county and City of Destin beach park, including Tarpon, James Lee, June White Decker, Norriego Point and the Shore at Crystal Beach, and at Henderson Beach State Park. Outside the parks, non-glass drinks are generally allowed on the sand, but check the posted signs.
  • No bonfires. Fires are illegal on the beach under Okaloosa County Ordinance 79-41, and a 2025 proposal to allow permitted fires died without a vote. Bonfire companies that serve Destin set up in Walton County, starting at Miramar Beach.
  • No glass anywhere, and no personal grills — only county-provided ones.
  • Leave No Trace. Anything left on the beach overnight gets removed by city staff.

Common questions

How many public beach accesses are there in Destin?

Thirteen. The City of Destin lists four beach parks (June White Decker, Norriego Point, the Shore at Crystal Beach and Tarpon Beach) and seven more beach trails, and James Lee Park (Okaloosa County) and Henderson Beach State Park are inside the city too. Most guides list five or six.

Is beach parking free in Destin?

Mostly no. Destin charges $20 per four hours in its paid beach areas along Scenic Highway 98 in Crystal Beach and Gulf Shore Drive on Holiday Isle. That rate has been in place since 2023; March 1, 2026 only brought a new way to pay. Two lots are confirmed free: Tarpon Beach Gulf Front Park and James Lee Park. Destin residents with a city pass and vehicles with handicap placards park free in the paid areas. Henderson Beach State Park charges $6 per vehicle to enter and requires a day-use reservation.

Which Destin beach has the most parking?

Henderson Beach State Park, with 422 day-use spaces plus 20 ADA and 24 RV spaces — but it now requires a day-use reservation booked in advance. Of the free lots, James Lee Park is largest at 170 spaces plus 6 ADA.

Can I bring a dog to a Destin beach?

No. Dogs are not allowed on any beach in Destin or Okaloosa County, and emotional support animals are specifically excluded — service animals only. Walton County, which begins just past James Lee Park, permits dogs but only for Walton County residents and property owners who hold a permit.

Where can I get a free beach wheelchair in Destin?

Three locations: James Lee Park, the Shirah Street access, and June White Decker Park. The Destin Fire Control District runs the program from 9am to 4pm, Memorial Day through Labor Day, free, with 24 hours notice on (850) 837-8413 (Monday through Friday). Chairs cannot be moved between locations and are unavailable under a red flag. Henderson Beach State Park has its own beach wheelchairs, available from the park office.

Are beach bonfires allowed in Destin?

No. Fires are illegal on Destin beaches under Okaloosa County Ordinance 79-41. A 2025 proposal to allow permitted bonfires on private beachfront died in July 2025 without a second. Bonfire companies that serve Destin visitors set up in Walton County, starting at Miramar Beach, under South Walton Fire District permits.
