If you only get one breakfast in Destin, this is the one. Tommy and Marcia Green run it with their son Preston, and the kitchen turns out food that has no business being this good in a shopping-centre unit. The Famous Lobster Gouda Grits — creamy gouda grits under lobster sautéed in their own coastal butter — is the plate people drive back for, and it's the dish Yelp reviewers rank highest. The Crawfish Eggs-Toufee runs it close: fried green tomatoes, bacon, poached eggs, Creole hollandaise.
Here's the detail that tells you who they are. Every Thursday morning, thirty-odd veterans take over a section of the dining room. They call themselves the Crispy Warriors. Nobody put that on a sign out front.

The most under-appreciated breakfast in Destin, and the earliest proper sit-down in town. Marco Sironi came from Milan and brought the coffee programme with him — this is espresso made by someone who grew up with it, not a machine somebody bought. The crepes are the move, sweet or savoury; the Nutella crepe runs about eleven dollars and there's a gluten-free crepe for three dollars more.
It sits in Shoreline Village on 98, which is why visitors walk past it for a decade and locals don't.

The Donut Hole Bakery Cafe

Jane and Reg Moore opened this in 1978. The Chandlers bought it in 1985 and are still running it — two families, one counter, nearly fifty years on the same stretch of 98. It has more Google reviews than any single-location breakfast restaurant in town by a distance.
Thirty-plus donut varieties a day, made in house. But the thing to actually order is the key lime pie, which is what the place is famous for and what Emerald Coast Magazine kept giving it Best Bakery for. And if you want the full experience, there's a breakfast plate on the menu called the Diet Plate: biscuits, sausage patties, cheese, fried eggs, gravy, hash browns. The name is the joke.

The Pancakery

Daryl Battaglia and Ricky Lehrmann grew up together in St. Bernard Parish outside New Orleans and both became teachers there. Katrina ended that. One went into restaurant management, the other into construction and firefighting, and in 2011 they opened a pancake house in Destin — deliberately breakfast-only, seven to two, because Daryl wanted to be home for his kids in the evenings.
Get the Bananas Foster ($14.89). It's the single most photographed plate in the building. The Cajun Benedict and the crab cake Benedict both have a following, and the omelettes run big.

Cafe Destin

The answer when you're hungry and you are not standing in a queue about it. Cafe Destin is counter service — you order at the front, they run the food out — and that one decision is why the room turns over while everyone else's lobby fills up. It opened in the middle of 2020, which was a spectacularly bad time to open a restaurant, and has since piled up about 2,700 Google reviews at 4.7.
The gouda cheese grits get singled out more than anything else on the menu, and they come with the Southern Breakfast ($12.45). The Smoked Salmon Benedict ($15.99) with choron sauce is the one to order if you want to know whether the kitchen can actually cook. It can.

The Ruby Slipper Cafe

Erich and Jennifer Weishaupt opened the first Ruby Slipper in Mid-City New Orleans in 2008, on a lot the city had written off as blighted, as part of pulling their own neighbourhood back together after Katrina. Erich has put it plainly: the restaurant was born out of the remnants of rebuilding. The Destin location arrived in spring 2022.
Benedicts are the house speciality and Eggs Cochon ($17.25) — apple-braised pork on a buttermilk biscuit — is the flagship. Order the Pig-Candy Bacon Bites ($6.75) for the table whether anyone asks for them or not.

Another Broken Egg Cafe

Founded in Old Mandeville, Louisiana in 1996 and now headquartered in Miramar Beach — which is the reason a national breakfast chain has a Cajun Shrimp & Crawfish Omelette, brunch jambalaya and Bourbon Street Pancakes on the menu. Order the Biscuit Beignets; they're the thing the brand is built on. The Lemon Blueberry Goat Cheese Pancakes are the other one worth crossing the room for.

Two things to get right here. Older guides still list Another Broken Egg at 979 Highway 98 E — that location is gone, and the address is Crackings now. And the kitchen labels items gluten-friendly, not gluten-free: there's no dedicated fryer, and the company says outright it can't guarantee the absence of gluten.

Asiago's Skillet

Technically not in Destin — it's on Okaloosa Island, about 5.6 miles and ten minutes west of HarborWalk across the Marler Bridge. Worth the bridge. Skillets are the format: country-fried steak, shrimp and grits, and a crab cake Benny that belongs in the conversation below. The biscuits are cat-head size and come with honey butter.
The order to know: ask them to "shipwreck my potatoes" ($1.99) and the home fries come back under bacon, cheese, sautéed onions and gravy. That phrasing is a genuine local shibboleth, not marketing copy.

It's a chain — 630-odd locations, founded in California in 1983 — and we're not going to pretend otherwise. It's here for two honest reasons.
First, it's the one place on this list where you can join the waitlist from your room before you've put shoes on. Second, it has by a long way the best-labelled menu in Destin for anyone with a dietary restriction: gluten-free items marked, vegan and vegetarian filters, a published allergen page. If you're travelling with a coeliac kid, that certainty is worth more than a better plate of grits somewhere else.
The Million Dollar Bacon — hard-glazed with brown sugar, black pepper, cayenne and maple — is the thing the chain is actually known for.

How to skip the line
Wait times are the number one complaint about where to eat breakfast in Destin between May and August. Four things actually work.
1Be early, not on time. The Donut Hole has no queue at all before 8:00a and wraps around the building after. Crackings and Asiago's both turn at about the same hour.
2Put your name in from the room. First Watch, The Pancakery, Ruby Slipper and Crackings all run online waitlists. Joining before you leave can save you the entire wait.
3Pick counter service. Cafe Destin's room turns over faster than anywhere else on this list purely because you order at the front instead of waiting for a server.
4Go Tuesday. Every wait figure here is a weekend number. Mid-week in shoulder season, most of this list is a walk-in.
On parking: most of these sit in shopping centres with free lots — Crackings, First Watch, Another Broken Egg, Cafe Destin. The exception is anything at HarborWalk Village, where parking runs about $20 a vehicle in season, with city lots across 98 at $15 all day. Asiago's has its own small lot that fills early and is actively towed.
