Why the tide is everything at Crab Island

Crab Island is a sandbar under the water on the north side of the Destin bridge, where Choctawhatchee Bay meets East Pass.

🌊 Incoming = clear water

When the tide comes in, clear green Gulf water pushes through East Pass and over the sandbar. That’s the picture-perfect Crab Island.

πŸ–οΈ Outgoing = bay water

On the way out, darker bay water drains back over the sandbar. Still fun, just not as clear.

πŸ“ Small tides, big wind

Destin usually sees one high and one low a day, about a foot apart. A strong wind can move the water more than the tide does.

⚠️ Mind the channel

The water goes from ankle-deep to over your head fast near the channel, and the current there is strong. Anchor on the sandbar side and keep kids in life jackets.

When is high tide at Crab Island today?

Today’s high and low tide times are at the top of this page, from NOAA’s Destin East Pass station next to the sandbar. Destin usually gets one high tide and one low tide a day.

What’s the best time to go to Crab Island?

Around high tide, especially the couple of hours before it, when the incoming tide pushes clear Gulf water over the sandbar. Weekday mornings are the least crowded.

How deep is the water at Crab Island?

Anywhere from ankle-deep to chest-deep, depending on where you anchor and the tide. It drops off quickly toward the channel.

How do you get to Crab Island?

Only by boat. Rent a pontoon or jet ski in Destin Harbor, or book a tour or boat trip that stops there.

Are there restrooms at Crab Island?

No. There are no facilities on the sandbar, so plan ahead and bring water, shade and sunscreen.

Can you take your boat to a restaurant from Crab Island?

Yes. Dewey Destin’s on the bay is closest to the sandbar, and several Destin Harbor restaurants have docks too, including The Edge, Harbor Docks and Boshamps. Space is limited, so call ahead. The full list is in the Tie up & dine section above.
